Presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, Peter Obi, has said June 12 remains a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey and a symbol of the collective democratic will of Nigerians.
Obi stated this in a statement posted on Friday through his verified social media accounts to mark this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
According to him, June 12 is more than a public holiday and should continue to serve as a reminder of the values of democracy, accountability and people-centred governance.
He said the annual commemoration provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s democratic journey and assess the performance of its institutions.
“Every year on June 12, the conversation inevitably turns to a critical assessment of the state of our nation. It serves as an annual benchmark for asking important questions: Are our elections today as transparent as they were in 1993? Is the social contract being honoured? Are the institutions of governance truly serving the people?” he stated.
Obi noted that June 12 represents both reflection and aspiration, adding that it honours Nigeria’s difficult democratic history while reinforcing the need to uphold democratic principles.
He said June 12 remains a constant reminder of the immense power inherent in the collective democratic will of the Nigerian people and the need to preserve democratic values.
“For us in Nigeria, June 12 is not merely a date on the calendar; it is the emotional and structural bedrock of our modern democratic identity. Officially recognised as Democracy Day, June 12 carries deep historical, political and social significance,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor stressed the need to strengthen democratic institutions, improve electoral credibility and ensure governance reflects the aspirations of the people.
According to him, understanding June 12 requires continuous reflection on its history, evolution and enduring symbolism in Nigeria’s democratic development.
He maintained that Nigeria can achieve a more inclusive and effective democratic system if leaders remain accountable and citizens continue to participate actively in the democratic process.
Obi expressed optimism about the country’s future, saying a new era of true democracy remains possible.
