The United Kingdom has announced the appointment of Mr. Peter Vowles as its new High Commissioner to Nigeria, succeeding Dr. Richard Montgomery, whose tenure is expected to end later this year.
The appointment was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), which disclosed that Vowles will officially assume duty in September 2026.
According to the statement, Vowles is a seasoned diplomat with more than two decades of experience in international development, governance, and diplomatic service across Africa and Asia.
He currently serves as the British High Commissioner to Zimbabwe, a position he has held since 2023, where he has overseen the United Kingdomâs diplomatic and development engagements in the Southern African nation.
Before his posting to Zimbabwe, Vowles served as FCDO Transformation Director between 2022 and 2023 and was the United Kingdomâs Ambassador to Myanmar from 2021 to 2022.
His previous leadership roles also included serving as Director for Asia, Caribbean and Overseas Territories at the former Department for International Development (DFID) between 2018 and 2021.
The incoming High Commissioner has extensive experience in Africa, having worked as DFID Country Director in Kenya, Deputy Country Director in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and held several senior programme management positions focused on governance, security, and development.
His international assignments have also taken him to India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe, where he worked on health, education, development, and partnership programmes in both governmental and non-governmental capacities.
The FCDO noted that Vowles began his career in development and public service before joining DFID in 2006, bringing a wealth of expertise in policy implementation, institutional reform, and international cooperation.
The statement added the appointment reflects the United Kingdomâs commitment to strengthening diplomatic, economic, and development relations with Nigeria, one of its most significant partners in Africa, as Vowles prepares to take up his new role later this year.
