Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua has expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for approving the renaming of the Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, after the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua.
President Tinubu recently approved the institution’s new name as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.
In a statement issued on Friday, the lawmaker described the decision as a fitting national recognition of the contributions of the late military officer, statesman, and pro-democracy advocate to Nigeria’s development.
“I receive with profound gratitude the announcement by President Bola Tinubu approving the renaming of the Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, to the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology,” he said.
According to him, the gesture goes beyond a symbolic change of name and represents an enduring tribute to the values and ideals championed by the late elder statesman.
“This gesture by the administration is more than a name on a building. It is a national recognition of my late brother, General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, and the role he played in Nigeria’s democratic journey,” the senator stated.
He recalled that the late Yar’Adua dedicated his life to nation-building and remained committed to promoting merit, institutional development, and national unity.
“As a soldier, statesman, and democrat, he believed in institutions, in service, and in a Nigeria where merit and courage matter more than tribe or background,” he said.
Senator Yar’Adua added that the decision would ensure that future generations of students are continually reminded of the virtues of sacrifice, leadership, and patriotism.
“By naming this university after him, Mr President has ensured that future generations of geologists, engineers, and technologists will be reminded daily that leadership is about sacrifice, vision, and commitment to nation-building,” he noted.
The lawmaker thanked President Tinubu and the Federal Government on behalf of the Yar’Adua family and the people of Katsina Central for what he described as a significant honour.
He expressed optimism that the institution would live up to its new status by producing highly skilled professionals capable of driving Nigeria’s energy sector and sustaining the democratic values for which the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua is remembered.
“May this institution live up to its new name by producing graduates who will power Nigeria’s energy future and uphold the values of democracy that General Shehu stood for,” he said.
