The Leader of the Senate, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, has congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of Democracy Day, urging citizens to remain steadfast in upholding democratic values while honouring the sacrifices of those who fought for the nation’s freedom and democratic governance.
Bamidele made the call in a statement issued to journalists on Friday in Abuja, where he described Democracy Day as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s political evolution and an opportunity to reflect on the country’s democratic journey, unity, and shared aspirations.
The Senate Leader, who also chairs the South-West Caucus of the National Assembly, paid glowing tribute to both living and fallen heroes whose sacrifices and commitment contributed to the restoration and sustenance of democratic rule in Nigeria.
“Today, I celebrate the enduring spirit of democracy, unity, and freedom that binds us together as one nation,” Bamidele said.
“As we mark this remarkable day, I honour the sacrifices of our living legends and fallen heroes whose courage, resilience, and tenacity paved the way for the democratic freedoms we enjoy today.”
According to him, Nigeria’s democratic gains were made possible through the dedication of patriots who stood firmly for justice, accountability, human rights, and the rule of law despite numerous challenges and personal sacrifices.
He noted that Democracy Day should serve not only as a celebration of democratic governance but also as a reminder of the collective responsibility required to preserve and strengthen democratic institutions.
“Their struggles and sacrifices remind us that democracy is a shared responsibility that must be protected, preserved, and strengthened for future generations,” he stated.
Bamidele stressed that democracy thrives when citizens remain vigilant, actively participate in governance, and hold leaders accountable, adding that sustained commitment from all stakeholders is essential for democratic growth and national development.
The senator further expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future and called on citizens to embrace unity and work together across political, ethnic, and religious divides to build a stronger and more prosperous nation.
He urged Nigerians to continue supporting initiatives aimed at deepening democratic values, promoting peace, fostering national cohesion, and advancing sustainable development across the country.
Reaffirming his confidence in Nigeria’s democratic future, Bamidele prayed for continued peace, stability, and prosperity and expressed hope that the country would attain greater heights in its
democratic journey.
“May our nation continue to advance in peace, justice, and prosperity for all,” he said.
