Headies Organisers Announce Toronto As Host Venue For 18th Edition

The organisers of The Headies Awards have announced a surprise destination for the 18th edition of Nigeria’s premier music awards ceremony: Toronto, Canada.

The announcement was made by the founder of the awards, Ayo Animashaun, during a press briefing held in Victoria Island, Lagos, on Monday. Animashaun stated that the decision to take the ceremony abroad is part of a strategic vision to elevate The Headies into a globally recognised award platform.

Addressing the media, the founder noted that major global entertainment events rely on multiple revenue streams and municipal backing rather than solely on corporate sponsorship. He noted that international cities often bid to host major ceremonies like the Grammy Awards because of the substantial economic and cultural benefits they bring to the host location.

According to the organiser, to facilitate the international move, the award organisers have secured a partnership with the travel firm Wakanow. The collaboration aims to offer travel packages and an enhanced experience for attendees, nominees, and industry stakeholders travelling from Lagos to Toronto.

The Headies first moved outside Nigeria in 2022 and 2023, when the 15th and 16th editions were held in Atlanta, Georgia, before returning home to Nigeria for the 17th edition in 2024. While the official date for the upcoming Canadian edition has not yet been confirmed, the announcement has already sparked widespread discussions among African music enthusiasts.
